چکیده

In this paper, two techniques for implementing a lowpower pipelined analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are proposed. First, the time-interleaved correlated double sampling (CDS) technique is proposed to compensate the finite gain error of operational amplifiers in switchedcapacitor circuits without a half-rate front-end sample-and-hold amplifier (SHA). Therefore, low-gain amplifiers and the SHA-less architecture can be used to effectively reduce power consumption of a pipelined ADC. Second, the back-end pipelined stages of a pipelined ADC are implemented using a low-power time-interleaved successive approximation (SA) ADC rather than operational amplifiers to further reduce the power consumption of the proposed pipelined ADC. A 9-bit, 100-MS/s hybrid pipelined-SA ADC is implemented in the TSMC 0.13 μm triple-well 1P8M CMOS process. The ADC achieves a spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of 62.15 dB and a signal-to-noise distortion ratio (SNDR) of 50.85-dB for 2-MHz input frequency at a 100-MS/s sampling rate. The power consumption is 21.2 mW from a 1.2 V supply. The core area of the ADC is 1.6 mm2. key words: analog-to-digital converter (ADC), data converter, correlated double sampling (CDS), time-interleaved, successive approximation (SA) ADC

A Low-Power 9-bit Pipelined CMOS ADC with Amplifier and Comparator Sharing Technique

This paper describes a pipelined analog-to-digital converter (ADC) employing a power and area efficient architecture. The adjacent stages of a pipeline share operational amplifiers. In order to keep accuracy of the amplifiers in the first stages, they use a partially sharing technique. The feature of the proposed scheme is that it also shares the comparators. The capacitors of the first stages ...

Compact low-power 7-bit 2.6 GS/s 65 nm CMOS ADC for 60 GHz applications

A 7-bit, 2.6 GS/s time-interleaved analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) for 60 GHz applications is designed and fabricated in 65 nm CMOS. The proposed subranging ADC architecture with time-shifting track-and-hold and two-phase amplification and encoding significantly enhances the speed of individual ADCs and reduces the number of interleaved channels to only four. At 2.6 GS/s sampling rate with ...

Techniques for Low - Power High - Performance ADCs

Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are essential building blocks in many electronic systems which require digital signal processing and storage of analog signals. Traditionally, ADCs are considered a power hungry circuit. This thesis investigates ADC design techniques to achieve high-performance with low power consumption. Two designs are demonst rated. The first design is a voltage scalable z...

Energy-efficient analog-to-digital conversion for ultra-wideband radio

In energy constrained signal processing and communication systems, a focus on the analog or digital circuits in isolation cannot achieve the minimum power consumption. Furthermore, in advanced technologies with significant variation, yield is traditionally achieved only through conservative design and a sacrifice of energy efficiency. In this thesis, these limitations are addressed with both a ...

Speed Optimization and Capacitor Mismatch Calibration for High-Resolution High-Speed Pipelined A/D Converters

System-on-a-chip (SOC) requires integration of analog circuits and digital circuits on a single silicon chip to decrease cost, power dissipation, volume and radiant noise from the data bus on the printed circuit board (PCB). For these mixed-signal intergrated circuits, the standard digital CMOS technology is the best choice in view of cost, power dissipation and implementation convenience. The ...
